Karen Thurman

I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order – John Burroughs

Born in England in 1962, Karen Thurman is an emerging photographer whose work captures the magic to be found in the natural world around us. She grew up in the grey concrete jungles of the Far East but despite that, or maybe because of it, she fell profoundly in love with nature. She uses her art to encourage reverence for Mother Nature.

Karen started photographing in her teens and now works in large format black & white, developing and printing her work in her own darkroom. Largely self-taught, she has also studied with celebrated master printers including John Blakemore and Bruce Barnbaum. Karen holds an MSc in Environmental Decision Making.

A member of the Film Shooters Collective, and a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), Ms Thurman’s work has appeared in a number of solo and group exhibitions. Karen is currently working on a multi-year project, On Your Doorstep documenting the immense natural beauty to be found in commuter belts and other non-iconic locations in the UK.
