Ian Fifield - Chester Arts Fair

Ian Fifield

From a young age, I had always been creative with my hands including an enthusiasm to draw and paint, mostly animals. In my late teens I started my working life in various nine to five jobs which I never really took to and wanted to take my life in the direction as an artist/painter so after a trip to Greece and Germany, in my early twenties, I decided to do this. Later, I also took a part-time two-year course in Fine and Applied Art and then shortly after worked in a design studio for two years.

I work from my own photos and colour notes in oil paints on acrylic primed cotton duck or linen canvases on contemporary subjects varying from coastal and landscape paintings to village and cityscapes. Much of my work has been of London including River Thames views (from Chiswick to Tower Bridge), the residential areas of the West End such as Mews and Regency houses, the pubs such as in Shepherd Market and paintings with a rainy theme often including something connected to London Transport.
Having painted a lot of architectural subjects and as mentioned before my admiration for the paintings of Canaletto I then decided that I must go to Venice. So in September 2001, I went over there for a few days to photograph as much material as possible to paint and get a feel of its mood and atmosphere. Other subject matter also includes figurative and wildlife which I would like to pursue more. Recently I have moved to Somerset so much of my work is now based around the landscape and coastal areas of the West Country.
